The PanOptix lens is a premium intraocular lens (IOL) that provides focused vision at three distances: near, mid, and far.

It’s an advanced premium lens made by Alcon and was given FDA approval in 2019. Since then, it’s been successfully used in well over 120 million operations (and counting). Its full name is the PanOptix® Trifocal IOL.

All About the PanOptix Intraocular Lens

  • What is the PanOptix lens?

What is the PanOptix lens?

The PanOptix was the world’s first trifocal lens. It remains one of the foremost options today and is built upon proven advanced technology to provide exceptional post-cataract surgery vision.

The lens is made from a revolutionary material that allows it to mimic how the natural lens works. This means that it can dramatically reduce or completely remove the need for eyeglasses—something that drives many people to choose them.

How does the PanOptix lens work?

The PanOptix intraocular lens has three points of focus:

  • Distance vision.
  • Intermediate vision.
  • Near vision.

When light enters the eye, the construction of the lens causes it to diffract (a process somewhat similar to scattering) and hit these different focal points. Because of this, there’s no need to look up or down to achieve a different focus—the eye naturally uses all three of these points so the brain can accurately translate the signals to allow you to see clearly at all distances.

This is in direct contrast to how bi or trifocal eyeglasses work. Patients are usually delighted to find that they don’t have to look down to see close-up or that there’s no visual distortion when looking to either side.

Is the PanOptix lens suitable for me?

Many people are opting for premium PanOptix lenses. They are an ideal choice if you:

  • Are keen to live a life with little—or even no—dependence on eyeglasses.
  • Your eyes are healthy (apart from having cataracts).
  • Your lifestyle includes reliance on both close and far distance vision. Perhaps you play a sport and enjoy reading, or you like bird watching and reading, for example.

As long as the eyes are generally healthy, they’re also suitable for those with a very strong prescription.

While the lens is suitable for many people, there are some particular situations that would contraindicate using the IOL. The main ones are if you have:

  • Certain problems with the retina.
  • Certain issues with the cornea.
  • Severe dry eye.

There are also some potential conditions that might make implanting a PanOptix lens less suitable, such as:

  • Previous eye surgery, including laser vision correction.
  • Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.
  • A previous retinal detachment.
  • A corneal transplant.

While these don’t definitively rule out the chances of PanOptix lens implantation, it’s something that will need to be individually assessed by an ophthalmologist.

Of course, it’s also important to understand the potential side effects. The most commonly reported are issues with glare, halos, and starbursts. However, the percentage of these is comparable to or less than those who have a regular monofocal lens. Overall, the PanOptix lens has a 99% satisfaction rate.
